U.S. Highway 70: Bruceton to Jackson – Tennessee

U.S. Highway 70: Bruceton to Jackson - Tennessee | Drive America

Join us for a leisurely drive covering about 40 miles westbound along U.S. Highway 70, connecting the small town charm of Bruceton to the busy hub of Jackson, Tennessee. Starting right in the heart of Bruceton, we roll west on Broad Street, which doubles as Highway 70 through town. Just a few blocks out, the scenery shifts to a mix of open countryside and the quaint community of Hollow Rock, where a brief jog across TN-114 reminds us that small crossroads can be surprisingly bustling in rural West Tennessee.

Beyond Hollow Rock, U.S. 70 carries us deeper into the region’s backroads heritage, proudly holding its nickname as the “Broadway of America.” We skirt the edges of Huntingdon rather than cutting through its historic downtown, turning onto Veterans Drive to bypass local traffic. Even on the bypass, though, it’s hard to miss the vibe of a classic Southern county seat — neat brick facades, a few shops, and hints of old railroad lines that once gave life to these small towns.

Once we rejoin Highway 70 proper after passing the TN-22 interchange and the split with US-70A, our route heads southwest past the Thousand Acre Recreation Area — a well-known local spot for boating and fishing. Keep your eyes peeled here: you’ll spot plenty of farmland and maybe even a deer or two along the tree-lined shoulders. Small communities like Leach and Cedar Grove add punctuation marks to the journey, offering glimpses of rural life with old churches, family farms, and roadside markets when they’re open.

Approaching Spring Creek, Highway 70 gently swings southwest at the intersection with TN-157, nudging us closer to Jackson. The approach to Jackson marks the transition from two-lane country highway to the wider, busier corridor feeding into Interstate 40 — a clear sign that West Tennessee’s biggest city is near. We wrap up this stretch just a stone’s throw from the I-40 interchange, leaving behind the Broadway of America for the hum of interstate traffic and the promise of city amenities.

🕰️
The “Broadway of America” was an early named auto trail roughly tracing parts of U.S. 70, so this qualifies as a Historic Alignment of that trail.
