US Highway 65: Missouri to Harrison – Arkansas

US Highway 65: Missouri to Harrison - Arkansas | Drive America

If you’re looking for a classic Ozarks drive that packs a bit of everything—smooth highway, rolling hills, and a friendly welcome to Arkansas—you’ll find it on US Highway 65 as it winds south from the Missouri state line to Harrison. This 21-mile stretch is one of those routes where you can almost feel the transition between two states, both in scenery and atmosphere. Whether you’re road-tripping, moving between Branson and the Buffalo River, or just exploring the Natural State, this drive is a great way to kick things off.

We start our journey just as we cross into Arkansas from Missouri. The character of US-65 changes almost immediately: what was a straightforward rural route in Missouri transforms into a divided highway, signaling your entry into the broader, more open landscapes of northern Arkansas. US-65 here is modern and well-maintained, built to handle everything from local commuters to RVs heading for the Ozarks’ many attractions. You’ll notice that while it’s divided for safety and smooth travel, there are still at-grade intersections—so stay alert for local traffic popping on and off the highway, especially as you get closer to small communities and side roads.

After a few miles of gentle hills and classic Arkansas woods, you’ll approach the major junction with US-412 just north of Harrison. This is a key crossroads in the region, connecting east-west travelers across northern Arkansas. Before you know it, you’ll spot the Arkansas Welcome Center—a newer facility that’s definitely worth a stop if you need a break, want some travel tips, or just want to pick up a state map and a selfie with the “Welcome to Arkansas” sign. The center is thoughtfully designed, with restrooms, picnic spots, and friendly staff who can point you to all sorts of local gems, from outdoor adventures to places to eat in Harrison.

Continuing south, US-65 enters Harrison, one of the larger towns in the region and a true gateway to the Ozarks. As you roll into town, you’ll notice a mix of local businesses, national chains, and hints of the area’s history—Harrison is a classic Arkansas town with deep roots. The northern approach gives you a nice look at the community’s growth, with newer development lining the highway and easy access to essentials if you need to refuel, grab a bite, or rest up. The drive wraps up at the intersection with Industrial Park Rd, just north of downtown Harrison, but if you have time, consider exploring Main Street or venturing out to the Buffalo National River area, just a short drive away.

Things to See & Do Along the Route:

  • Ozark Views: The rolling hills and forested ridges along this stretch offer that classic “Ozark Mountain” vibe. Look for roadside pull-offs to snap a few photos, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when the light is just right.

  • Arkansas Welcome Center: Just north of Harrison, this is more than just a bathroom break. Staff can help you plan your Ozarks adventure, whether you’re hiking, floating, or just passing through.

  • Downtown Harrison: If you’re up for a short detour, head into town for local eats, small shops, and the historic Boone County Courthouse square. There are plenty of parks and green spaces, too.
