Tennessee Route 55: Manchester to McMinnville

Tennessee Route 55: Manchester to McMinnville | Drive America

Leaving the city behind, TN-55 quickly transitions from a busy town arterial into a more relaxed, two- and four-lane rural highway. Almost immediately, we encounter the interchange with I-24, a vital east-west corridor connecting Nashville to Chattanooga. After crossing the interstate, the road straightens out and begins a gentle climb through the countryside, with pastoral scenes unfolding on either side. Depending on the season, you might catch fields of corn, hay bales dotting open pastures, or vibrant fall foliage that blankets the ridgelines in color.

As we continue northeast, we reach the unincorporated community of Summitville, a small residential area tucked between wooded hills and open farmland. There are a few roadside churches and local homes here, but this stretch of the route is largely quiet and serene—a pleasant contrast to the interstate bustle we left behind. This part of the route is also notable for its views of the Highland Rim, a geographic feature that forms a rugged, scenic boundary to the east.

Approaching the town of Morrison, TN-55 intersects with Tennessee Route 287. Morrison is a small yet industrious town with roots in agriculture and manufacturing. Though compact, it has an important role in the region’s economy, with local businesses supporting nearby industry and farming. If you’re interested in a quick detour, Morrison’s historic downtown offers a few local diners and small-town charm. Morrison is also near the site of a large Bridgestone manufacturing plant, one of the biggest tire production facilities in North America.

Back on the road, TN-55 veers slightly northward as we pass through the small community of Smartt, another rural area whose name often catches the attention of travelers. Smartt is largely residential and agricultural, but it’s worth slowing down a bit here to appreciate the peaceful surroundings—this is a true slice of Middle Tennessee countryside.

Soon enough, the city limits of McMinnville come into view. As we enter the city, TN-55 transitions into a busier commercial corridor, with gas stations, shopping centers, and restaurants dotting the roadside. At the interchange with U.S. Highway 70S, TN-55 officially ends, but our journey continues briefly as we follow US-70S east into downtown McMinnville. After crossing the junction with TN-56, we end our trip at Faulkner Springs Road, just a few miles shy of the heart of McMinnville.

McMinnville, often referred to as the “Nursery Capital of the World,” is a vibrant city known for its horticultural exports and scenic beauty. If you’ve got time after the drive, consider visiting Cumberland Caverns or the historic Park Theatre downtown, both of which offer unique windows into the region’s character.
