[Revisited] Missouri Route 86: Eagle Rock to Carr Lane

Missouri Route 86: Eagle Rock to Carr Lane [Revisited] | Drive America

If you’re looking for a classic Ozarks drive packed with rolling hills, wooded vistas, and a touch of rural charm, Missouri Route 86 from Eagle Rock to Carr Lane absolutely delivers. This nine-mile stretch in Barry County is one of those routes that feels tucked away from the world—a little less traveled, but no less beautiful. Let’s explore what makes this piece of Missouri highway a memorable ride.

We kick things off just east of Eagle Rock, turning onto Missouri Route 86 from Supplemental Route P. Eagle Rock itself is a quiet lake town perched near the banks of Table Rock Lake, and if you’ve got time before your drive, consider exploring the Eagle Rock Marina or stretching your legs at the nearby public access on Table Rock’s south shore. There’s also the “Eagle Rock” itself, a local landmark and a great photo stop if you’re into quirky roadside features.

Heading east on MO-86, the highway wastes no time immersing us in the rolling foothills of the Ozarks. The road winds up and down through thick stands of hardwoods and opens up occasionally to reveal panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. This stretch is a favorite for both local drivers and out-of-state visitors looking for a scenic shortcut across the region. A couple miles in, we reach the intersection with Supplemental Route H. Just a stone’s throw south is the Arkansas border and AR-143, so if you’re feeling adventurous, it’s easy to dip down into Arkansas for a quick side trip—maybe toward Berryville or Eureka Springs.

Continuing east on Route 86, we soon cross the Kings River, a serene waterway that meanders north from Arkansas. The Kings River bridge offers a brief but lovely view, especially in spring when everything is lush and green, or in the fall when the hills explode in color. After the river, it’s just another mile or so to Carr Lane, a tiny crossroads community with rural vibes and classic Ozark scenery. The journey wraps up at the junction with Missouri Route 39—if you’re still itching for adventure, you can continue north toward Shell Knob and Table Rock Lake, or south toward the Arkansas line.

Things to See and Do Along the Route:

Table Rock Lake: Just west of Eagle Rock, perfect for boating, fishing, or a quick lakeside picnic.

Eagle Rock Marina: Boat rentals and supplies for a day on the water.

Kings River Crossing: A scenic spot for photos or a quick break.

Ozark Hills and Forests: Don’t miss the wildflowers in spring or the fall foliage!

Side trip opportunities: AR-143 leads you straight into northern Arkansas’s scenic backroads.
