Arkansas Highway 60: Fourche Junction to Perryville

[Repost] Arkansas Highway 60: Fourche Junction to Perryville | Drive America

Drive America’s Highways for 21 miles east along Arkansas Highway 60 from Fourche Junction to Perryville.

The journey along Arkansas Highway 60 from Fourche Junction to Perryville showcases the rugged beauty of the Ouachita Mountains. Starting at the intersection with Scenic Arkansas Highway 7 near Nimrod Lake, the route quickly immerses travelers in a landscape of forested ridges, narrow valleys, and winding roads. As we depart Fourche Junction—locally pronounced “Fooshe”—we follow the highway eastward as it snakes between the surrounding hills, offering brief glimpses of the lake and nearby streams.

Continuing east, the route passes through the small communities of Nimrod and Aplin. These quiet settlements serve as reminders of the region’s rural heritage, with modest homes, farmland, and occasional roadside churches dotting the landscape. At Aplin, we cross Arkansas Highway 155, a scenic spur that leads deeper into the Ouachita wilderness. This stretch of AR-60 remains mostly forested and lightly traveled, making it a peaceful, reflective drive.

As we approach Perryville, the terrain begins to level out slightly, and signs of a more developed town appear. Upon entering Perryville, AR-60 passes residential neighborhoods and local businesses before concluding its eastward journey at the intersection with Arkansas Highway 9. This segment of AR-60 is a hidden gem for those seeking a scenic and relaxing drive through one of Arkansas’s lesser-known mountain corridors.
