Arkansas Highway 216: Houston to Antioch

Arkansas Highway 216: Houston to Antioch | Drive America

Looking for a scenic, low-key drive through the heart of Perry County, Arkansas? Let’s take a trip along Arkansas Highway 216, stretching about 10 miles from the small town of Houston to the quiet crossroads at Antioch. This route isn’t long, but it’s a great example of rural Arkansas backroad charm, connecting you to the landscapes, history, and communities that define this part of the state.

We kick things off in Houston, a tiny community nestled right where AR-216 meets Arkansas Highway 60. Heading southwest out of town, the highway quickly leaves behind the few clustered homes and businesses, winding past open fields and scattered woodlands. You’ll spot plenty of farmland along this segment—expect to see rolling pastures, barns, and maybe even a few grazing cows. This stretch is classic rural Arkansas: peaceful, green, and dotted with the signs of local agriculture.

After about four and a half miles, the road curves south and meets up with Arkansas Highway 300 West. Here, AR-216 and AR-300 share the pavement for a couple of miles. This short concurrency is worth noting—not only does it make for an easy transition if you’re aiming to explore more of the area, but it also passes right by a couple of country churches and the occasional roadside produce stand in summer. Keep your eyes peeled for locals selling fresh vegetables or farm eggs, especially as you get closer to the warmer months.

Soon, AR-300 splits off to the east, but we stick with AR-216 and keep heading south for just a quarter mile. At the next dogleg—yes, it’s a sharp westward turn, so pay attention to the signage—you’ll officially be entering the community of Antioch. This is one of those “blink and you’ll miss it” places, but it marks the western end of the highway. Here, AR-216 meets the intersection with Arkansas Highways 9 and 10. From this junction, you can continue your journey west toward Perryville or north toward Morrilton, making AR-216 a handy connector for local travelers and road trippers alike.

Points of Interest Along the Route:

Houston: While small, Houston is known for its annual community events and its position near the Arkansas River, just a few minutes north of the highway’s start. If you’re up for a short detour, you can check out the river or stop in at one of the local churches that anchor this tight-knit community.

Farmland & Pastures: The drive between Houston and Antioch is scenic, especially in spring and summer. You’ll pass through agricultural land, wooded patches, and the occasional creek crossing—ideal for anyone wanting to see “real Arkansas” away from the highways.

Antioch: More crossroads than town, Antioch’s main claim to fame is the convergence of three highways. Still, it’s a classic rural Arkansas stop, surrounded by quiet fields and wooded parcels. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can use this junction to head deeper into Perry County or toward the Ouachita Mountains.

Whether you’re passing through for a local commute or just out for a relaxing afternoon drive, Arkansas Highway 216 offers a taste of small-town and rural life just a short distance from more heavily traveled routes. The drive is peaceful, the views are pretty, and there’s always the chance to spot something unexpected along the way—especially if you’re traveling during harvest season.
