Arkansas Highway 125: Peel Ferry to Missouri

Arkansas Highway 125 offers one of the most unique driving experiences in the state — and arguably, the country — as it includes a rare ferry crossing over Bull Shoals Lake. Our journey begins aboard the Peel Ferry, the last remaining free ferry operated by the Arkansas Department of Transportation. Once we disembark on the western shore of the lake near the unincorporated community of Peel, we climb the steep, winding grade away from the water. This short but memorable 1-mile segment captures a slice of Ozark mountain charm that few routes can replicate.

As we crest the hill, a small turnout and park area invite travelers to pause for a moment and enjoy the panoramic view of Bull Shoals Lake. It’s a peaceful overlook, surrounded by oak and hickory trees, offering picnic tables and a chance to stretch your legs after the ferry ride. Whether you’re a motorcyclist enjoying the curves of the Ozarks or a road tripper ticking off unique highway segments, this spot is worth the quick detour.

Continuing north, AR-125 takes us through a final wooded stretch of the Arkansas Ozarks. It’s a quiet drive — just the road, the trees, and the anticipation of reaching the Missouri state line. At just about a mile from the ferry landing, we cross into Missouri where AR-125 becomes MO-125, continuing its scenic run north toward Protem and beyond. This highway is a favorite among travelers for its mix of natural beauty and the novelty of incorporating a boat ride into a state highway — something few roads in the nation can claim.
