Arkansas Highway 103: Osage to Compton

Arkansas Highway 103 - Osage to Compton | Drive America

Drive with us along one of the more underappreciated yet truly scenic stretches of rural highway in northwest ArkansasArkansas Highway 103 from Osage to Compton. This 12-mile segment begins at the junction with U.S. Highway 412 in the unincorporated community of Osage, located in a wide valley framed by the ancient ridgelines of the Ozark Mountains. Almost immediately, the drive sets a tone of rustic charm and natural beauty as we cross Osage Creek, marking the beginning of a route that’s as winding as it is memorable.

As we head south, AR-103 carves its way through a mix of open pastureland and dense forest. We cross Kenner Creek several times, its serpentine path dictating the road’s gentle curves and contributing to the pastoral ambiance of the drive. This region of Arkansas is sparsely populated, with scattered farms, weathered barns, and old mailboxes bearing family names that have likely been here for generations. If you’re seeking peace and a slice of old Arkansas, this route delivers it in full.

The landscape gradually becomes more rugged as the elevation changes become more noticeable. Toward the final stretch of the drive, the road begins a steady climb up a low mountain, offering fleeting glimpses of panoramic views through breaks in the tree line. The terrain here is classic Ozark—thick with hardwoods, limestone outcrops, and hidden hollows. As we curve east in the final mile, we enter the small community of Compton, where the route comes to an end at the intersection with Arkansas Highway 43.

Although short, this stretch of AR-103 is rich in rural character and visual appeal. It’s not only a pleasant drive but also a gateway to many outdoor destinations. The Buffalo National River lies just east of Compton, making this route a scenic approach for hikers, paddlers, or anyone seeking natural solitude. Compton itself serves as a jumping-off point for some of the most rugged trails in the area, including Hemmed-In Hollow and Hideout Hollow, both accessible with just a short detour from the highway.
