Arkansas Highway 103: Green Forest to Rudd

Arkansas Highway 103 - Green Forest to Rudd | Drive America

Hop in as we drive 13 scenic miles south along Arkansas Highway 103, beginning just outside the town of Green Forest and winding our way to the rural community of Rudd in the heart of the Ozarks. This two-lane highway cuts a charming path through northern Carroll County, showcasing a range of natural beauty—from wide-open farmland to the rugged hills that make this corner of Arkansas a backroad favorite.

Our journey begins as we turn south onto AR-103 from U.S. Highway 62, just a stone’s throw west of downtown Green Forest. The first stretch of highway is pleasantly straightforward—literally. For about four miles, the road runs arrow-straight through open farmland, flanked by fences, barns, and an occasional silo. The views are classic Ozark foothills: pastureland in the foreground with misty mountains rising in the distance. It’s an easy and relaxing drive with broad skies overhead, especially beautiful around sunrise or late afternoon when the fields glow gold.

But this wouldn’t be Arkansas if things stayed flat for long. Just past the farmlands, the terrain starts to shift. The road gains elevation and trades its straight lines for graceful curves. This is where AR-103 starts to show off a bit—winding around wooded hills, ducking in and out of hollows, and giving drivers a good taste of what the Ozark Mountains are all about. We soon arrive in the tiny community of Rule, where AR-103 begins to parallel Osage Creek. For about a mile, the road hugs the creek, offering glimpses of the water through thick vegetation. The drive feels especially tranquil here, especially during the spring when everything is in bloom, or after a summer rain when Osage Creek runs fuller and more vibrant.

After crossing Osage Creek, we make our way southwest toward Rudd, a small but storied spot where AR-103 angles southeast. This final leg of the route is marked by tighter curves, steeper grades, and dense woods—typical of the upper Buffalo River region. There are no large towns here, but there’s something rewarding in the remoteness. A few scattered homes and farms dot the roadside, but otherwise, this is pure Ozark countryside. The route eventually levels off as we approach U.S. Highway 412, where our drive comes to an end just outside the community of Osage.

While this segment of AR-103 may not be well-known outside of local circles, it’s a scenic and quietly rewarding drive—especially for those who appreciate farmland-to-forest transitions, creekside stretches, and the laid-back pace of rural Arkansas. It also serves as a gateway to even more rugged Ozark driving for those continuing south toward Compton and Ponca.
