[Revisited] Interstate 75: Dayton to Cincinnati – Ohio

Heading south on Interstate 75 from Dayton to Cincinnati is more than just a drive through the heart of southwest Ohio—it’s a front-row seat to the region’s changing landscapes, bustling suburbs, and urban energy. Starting in Miamisburg, just south of Dayton at the junction with I-675, we join I-75 for a 43-mile stretch that showcases everything from small-town charm to the big-city skyline.

As we pull onto I-75, we’re quickly greeted by the rolling terrain and patchwork of communities that make up the Dayton-Cincinnati corridor. Early on, we pass through Franklin and Springboro—two towns that blend suburban comforts with easy access to both metro areas. It’s not uncommon to spot local attractions like the La Comedia Dinner Theatre in Springboro, or, if you detour a little, the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force back in Dayton. Farther along, Middletown and Monroe offer a glimpse into Ohio’s manufacturing roots, with historic downtowns, riverfront parks, and, for the shoppers among us, the Cincinnati Premium Outlets just off the highway in Monroe.

Crossing into the outskirts of Cincinnati, I-75 begins to feel less like a throughway and more like a lifeline threading together the northern suburbs. The SR-129 interchange signals our approach to the greater Cincinnati area, and not long after, we hit the loop of Interstate 275, which acts as the city’s beltway. Passing through Sharonville, home to Sharon Woods (one of the oldest and most scenic parks in the region), we’re officially inside the I-275 loop—and this is where the drive gets a little more interesting.

If you’ve never driven I-75 through Cincinnati, brace yourself. The highway narrows and the traffic density picks up. Interchanges start to come fast and furious—first with the Ronald Reagan Cross County Highway (SR-126), then the Norwood Lateral (SR-562), and soon the southern terminus of Interstate 74. This is actually the original endpoint for I-74, before extensions eastward into North Carolina rewrote the history books.

Navigating these curves and ramps, you’ll see the skyline of downtown Cincinnati rise ahead. This stretch of I-75 is known for its tricky lanes and constant flow of vehicles, so it pays to stay alert, especially as exits are tightly spaced and traffic merges from several directions. Local tip: keep right for the best views as you pass by historic neighborhoods like Camp Washington and the University of Cincinnati’s medical campus.

Finally, I-71 joins us for a dramatic, double-decker ride across the iconic Brent Spence Bridge over the Ohio River—a structure as famous for its traffic jams as for its view of the city. On the other side, we land in Covington, Kentucky, with Cincinnati’s skyline in the rearview and a sense of accomplishment for conquering one of Ohio’s busiest interstate corridors.
