Interstate 20: Ft. Worth ~ Texas (Eastbound)

Interstate 20 serves as one of the major east-west corridors across Texas, and nowhere is that more evident than in Fort Worth. In this 17-mile eastbound stretch through the city, we trace I-20 from just west of town to the southeast side, passing through a mix of urban interchanges, residential sprawl, and commercial zones that define the modern Fort Worth freeway experience.

Our drive begins just before the large junction where Interstate 30 ends its westward journey and merges with I-20. This spot is a crucial connection point for travelers heading either into downtown Fort Worth via I-30 or continuing south and east on I-20. Heading southeast initially, I-20 skirts the southern edge of the city—away from the congestion of downtown—offering a more suburban feel with wide lanes, steady traffic, and views of commercial development and tree-lined neighborhoods.

Soon, we reach the interchange with Interstate 820 and U.S. Route 377. I-820, the Fort Worth loop, connects drivers to the city’s northern and eastern suburbs, while US-377 offers access to the heart of Fort Worth and neighborhoods like Benbrook and Hulen. Past this junction, I-20 straightens out to run due east for a few miles. The terrain here flattens as we move through the outskirts of neighborhoods like Wedgwood and Trail Lake, with occasional glimpses of local shopping centers, office parks, and residential enclaves just beyond the sound walls.

Approaching the Chisholm Trail Parkway, the route turns slightly to the southeast. This toll road offers a fast route into the heart of downtown and has quickly become a vital artery for commuters from the southwest suburbs. On our right, you might spot parts of the Edgecliff Village area—quiet, leafy, and tucked just out of sight of the freeway. From here, I-20 begins to curve northeast, a subtle bend that signals we’re getting closer to the inner loop.

The final stretch of our journey brings us to one of the busiest interchanges in the city—Interstate 35W. This major north-south corridor links Fort Worth to Denton in the north and Burleson and Waco in the south. As we approach this massive interchange, the traffic picks up and the road widens. From here, eastbound I-20 continues toward Arlington, Grand Prairie, and eventually Dallas—but our drive wraps up at the I-35W interchange on the southeast side of Fort Worth.

Though this isn’t the most scenic stretch of I-20, it’s a crucial backbone for daily commuters and regional travelers alike. The route offers easy access to Fort Worth’s southern neighborhoods, several major highways, and a glimpse at how this sprawling city is tied together by its road network.
