From the foothills of the Ouachitas to the quiet stretches of farmland, Narrows Road in Saline County, Arkansas offers a short but scenic detour through the rural heart of the state. This 7-mile drive takes us south from the small community of Crows, beginning at the intersection with Arkansas Highway 5, and winds its way through a sparsely traveled, two-lane county road before reaching its southern end at U.S. Highway 70, just east of Lonsdale.
The road lives up to its name—narrow and tucked into a corridor of dense woods and open pastureland. Early on, we pass rolling farmland on either side, with wide, fenced fields dotted by barns and the occasional grazing livestock. The forest closes in sporadically, offering shaded stretches of pavement and a bit of natural canopy that enhances the backroad feel. There’s a sense of isolation out here, but not in a bad way—just the sort of peace and quiet that comes with driving a forgotten stretch of rural Arkansas.
Midway through the drive, the landscape alternates between clearings and wooded ravines, with subtle elevation changes keeping the route gently winding. You won’t find gas stations or shops along Narrows Road—it’s purely a connector between two rural highways—but if you’re exploring the backroads of Saline County, it makes for a relaxing and enjoyable ride. At the southern end, we reach U.S. Route 70, a key east-west corridor in central Arkansas that provides easy access to Hot Springs to the west or Benton if you’re continuing your journey east. This intersection marks the end of the drive, but it also opens the door to many more roads worth exploring across this region.
