Take a ride with us as we head south down one of Little Rock’s most iconic city streets: Main Street. In this short but dynamic 2-mile drive, we explore a diverse slice of Arkansas’s capital city—from the urban heartbeat of downtown to the historic charm of the SoMa (South Main) district.
We begin our journey at the intersection of Main Street and 3rd Street, right in the core of downtown Little Rock. This area is dense with office buildings, historic landmarks, and revitalized storefronts, many of which have been given new life through recent redevelopment efforts. Just a few blocks south, we reach the interchange with Interstate 630—one of the city’s busiest east-west corridors—marking a transition point between the formal downtown grid and the more eclectic neighborhoods to the south.
Continuing southward past I-630, Main Street transforms into the SoMa District, a vibrant hub of local culture, food, and art. This revitalized corridor is home to a range of attractions, including community theaters, the Esse Purse Museum, vintage boutiques, and an impressive variety of eateries. On any given day, you’ll find a mix of pedestrians, cyclists, and cars taking in the scenery. Murals line some of the buildings, and historic homes have been repurposed into shops, making it one of the most walkable and unique stretches in the city.
As we move past 17th Street, the scenery begins to shift again—residential buildings start to mix in with older commercial properties. Here, the pace slows a bit as we near the southern end of our drive. We pass through quieter blocks before arriving at the intersection with Arkansas Highway 365, also known locally as Roosevelt Road. This major east-west artery marks the end of our trip, but also the beginning of a whole new set of Little Rock neighborhoods for those continuing the drive south or east.
