Kentucky Route 998: Olivet Church Road – Paducah, Kentucky

Kentucky Highway 998 - US Highway 60 - US Highway 62 | Drive America

Take a short but essential ride through the western edge of Paducah as we follow Kentucky Route 998—locally known as Olivet Church Road—linking two of the region’s most important U.S. highways. Though only 2.5 miles long, this corridor plays an outsized role in local travel, threading together the city’s commercial hubs, suburban growth, and pockets of rural charm.

Our drive begins at the busy intersection with U.S. Highway 60 (Hinkleville Road), one of Paducah’s main east-west thoroughfares. On this end of KY-998, we’re flanked by a modern sprawl of chain retailers, medical offices, and fast-food restaurants—a reflection of the city’s expanding outer ring. Despite the commercial feel, hints of Paducah’s character remain. Just behind the storefronts, established neighborhoods peek through with tree-lined side streets and the occasional brick church or red barn barely visible between new developments. Traffic here is brisk but manageable, especially outside the evening rush.

As we head south, the road gently curves and begins to lose some of its commercial density. The shopping centers and gas stations fade into a more suburban palette—wider lots, single-story homes, and a mix of old-growth trees and newly planted saplings. This transition zone marks a shift in tone: Olivet Church Road becomes less of a retail access point and more of a connector road, threading its way through the southwest corner of McCracken County. We pass residential pockets, schools, and open fields—landscapes that speak to the area’s agricultural roots even as development continues to press outward. Though we’re still within Paducah’s orbit, the landscape begins to breathe, giving way to a more relaxed rhythm.

Eventually, we arrive at the junction with U.S. Highway 62 (Blandville Road), a quieter but equally significant corridor that arcs west toward Ballard County and east toward downtown Paducah. This southern terminus of KY-998 is less flashy than where we began, but no less important. Nearby farms and utility sheds dot the horizon, and the pace of life seems to slow just a bit. There’s a sense that while the city may be close at hand, the open countryside isn’t far off. For commuters, students, and long-time locals alike, Olivet Church Road is a vital shortcut and a subtle reminder of Paducah’s blend of small-town roots and regional connectivity.

In many ways, KY-998 is more than just a state-maintained route—it’s a snapshot of Paducah’s evolution. From retail frontage to suburban edge and back into rolling land, this short highway captures the layered texture of a town growing outward while holding onto its identity. It may not show up in tourist brochures or national road guides, but to those who travel it daily, Olivet Church Road is a small but steady pulse in the heart of far western Kentucky.
