If you want a quick, classic taste of Route 66 history in Missouri, the stretch between Halltown and Spencer packs a lot of charm into just a single mile. Starting at the famed Gary’s Gay Parita gas station, we head west out of Halltown on what is commonly called MO-266 on maps, but don’t let that fool you — this road is a surviving historic alignment of the original U.S. Route 66, now maintained as a county road. Even though it’s short, this segment lets us roll back the clock and experience the old Mother Road the way travelers did generations ago.
Right from the jump, Gary’s Gay Parita sets the mood with its period gas pumps, quirky memorabilia, and friendly Route 66 spirit. It’s a must-stop for anyone interested in the route’s heritage — grab a photo, chat with other travelers, and maybe pick up a souvenir. As we roll west, the countryside opens up, and you quickly leave modern highways behind for a narrow, gently curving lane bordered by fields and scattered woods. The vibe is pure nostalgia — you can almost imagine the era of classic cars and cross-country road trips.
A little ways along, we cross Turnback Creek, which, depending on the season, might be a trickle or a proper little river. Keep an eye out for the bridge — it’s got that unmistakable old-school character, and the area around it is especially pretty in spring and fall. Not far past the creek is the entrance to Paris Springs, a tiny community with a deep connection to early Route 66 history. While the main attraction here is really the scenery and the sense of traveling back in time, you can spot traces of former businesses and old structures if you look closely.
Our drive wraps up at the intersection with Missouri Highway 96, just outside Spencer. This is where Route 66 purists will appreciate the sense of continuity — from here, you can easily keep exploring more segments of the old road, including other historic alignments and small towns that owe their existence to the highway. The entire mile is a living reminder of why Route 66 remains a legend for road trippers.
