U.S. Route 78: Riverside to Pell City – Alabama

If you’re looking for a short but scenic ride through east-central Alabama, the stretch of U.S. Route 78 from Riverside to Pell City offers just the right blend of peaceful riverside views and small-town charm. Clocking in at just under 5 miles, this westbound route gives drivers a quick look at the Coosa River’s quiet banks before transitioning into the more developed landscape of Pell City.

Our drive begins just south of the interchange with Interstate 20 in Riverside, a small city nestled along the east bank of the Coosa River. Almost immediately, US-78 skirts close to the river’s edge, offering drivers fleeting views of the water through gaps in the trees. The road here is two lanes with gentle curves and light traffic—perfect for a relaxed cruise. This initial portion runs roughly parallel to the river for about a mile before the route turns more directly west.

As we approach Pell City, the scenery begins to shift from wooded riverside terrain to a more suburban environment. You’ll notice a few local businesses and small neighborhoods popping up, a sign that we’re entering the outskirts of town. The road gradually widens and becomes more developed, with intersections leading into residential communities and local roads that serve the area.

Upon entering Pell City proper, U.S. 78 takes on the character of a more traditional arterial road. The area becomes noticeably busier, particularly near the intersection with the U.S. Route 231 access road—our endpoint for this segment. This major intersection serves as a local hub, with connections to I-20 just to the north and a mix of restaurants, gas stations, and retail spots that cater to both locals and travelers.

While this may be a short route, it’s a useful connector for anyone heading to or from I-20, especially for those looking to avoid the busier stretches of freeway in favor of a slower-paced alternative. It also serves as an important link between two small communities that are growing in both population and economic activity.

Whether you’re on a regional road trip or just out for a casual afternoon drive, the Riverside to Pell City leg of U.S. Route 78 offers a glimpse into Alabama’s blend of natural beauty and small-town life—no long detours required.
