Mississippi Highway 1: Rolling Fork to Greenville

Mississippi Highway 1, often referred to as part of the Great River Road, offers a distinctly Southern experience as it winds through the agricultural heartland of the Mississippi Delta. The 36-mile stretch between Rolling Fork and Greenville is more than just a connection between two towns—it’s a journey through rich farmland, sleepy river communities, and some of the flattest, most fertile ground in the country. We begin our drive just west of Rolling Fork, where MS-1 meets MS-14. Rolling Fork itself is known for its connection to President Theodore Roosevelt’s famous bear hunt, which inspired the creation of the teddy bear. As we head north, this rural route offers glimpses of small-town life amid a sea of fields that stretch to the horizon.

The highway quickly sets its tone with a peaceful, pastoral rhythm. Passing through the quiet community of Grace, and then Hampton, we reach an intersection with MS-16, one of several key crossroads in this region. This part of the Delta is dominated by row crops—cotton, soybeans, and corn dominate the landscape—and during harvest season, you’re likely to encounter tractors and farm trucks sharing the road. Keep your eyes peeled for old general stores, rusty grain bins, and levees off in the distance; they all tell the story of a region shaped by the Mississippi River’s floodplain. Continuing northwest, the highway reaches the small settlement of Foote, where the road hugs slightly closer to the banks of the river before swinging back inland near Erwin.

From Erwin northward, the road becomes a bit more dynamic in its path, intersecting with MS-12 before bending northeast toward Wayside. Here, MS-1 meets MS-438, and while there aren’t major tourist stops, the journey itself is scenic in that uniquely Delta way—wide-open skies, still bayous, and stands of hardwoods breaking up the agricultural grid. After Wayside, the road shifts northwest again through Swiftwater, passing MS-454 before taking a final turn north toward Greenville. This last leg brings more signs of city life—gas stations, traffic lights, and businesses—before the route ends just south of Bowman Boulevard in Greenville. While this stretch of Mississippi Highway 1 might not offer dramatic landscapes, it delivers a quiet charm rooted in history, land, and the life of the Delta.
